Upcoming FemSMed panels at the Ninth Annual Conference of the European Academy of Religion on "Religions and (In)equalities" in Rome

Six of our team members will be presenting their research in two panels organized by FemSMed's postdocs:

 

CONVERSIONS AT THE MARGINS: ENSLAVED WOMEN AND RELIGIOUS POWER IN EARLY MODERN EUROPE, organized by Dr. Benedetta Chizzolini, with the participation of Prof. Serena Di Nepi and Prof. Massimo Carlo Giannini, will be held on Thursday 02 July 2026 from 09:00 to 11:10 and include presentations by Dr. Benedetta Chizzolini on "Female Baptisms and Political Power: The Conversions of Enslaved Women in Medicean Tuscany"'; by Nil Abend, on "Enslaved Women: Renegades and their Masters, Conversion, Abuse, and Agency," and by Eliah Jaffe, on "Between Conversion and Judaizing: Enslaved Female Converts in Jewish Households in Early Modern Italy."

 

ENSLAVED WOMEN, CHARITY, AND RELIGIOUS CONVERSION: GENDERED INEQUALITIES IN EARLY MODERN EUROPE, organized by Dr. Joseph Jackson-Eade and chaired by Prof. Giovanni Tarantino, will be held on Thursday 02 July 2026 from 17:20 to 19:30 and include presentations by Eynav Ovadia, on "Mothers and Babies: Enslaved Women and their Abandoned Children at the Ospedale degli Innocenti in Florence"; by Dr. Joseph Jackson-Eade on "Washing their Dirty Linen in Public? Washwerwomen and Charitable Institutions in Sixteenth-Century Lisbon," and by Lisa Molina on "The Charitable Fashioning of Salvation: The Baptismal Dress of Enslaved Women in Seventeenth-Century Livorno."
