FemSMed's study trip to Rome, Naples, and the Castelli Romani

On June 26-July 3, FemsMed's members participated in a study trip to Italy. We started out with a Roman dinner with our incoming postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Michele Santoro, and continued the following day with an inspiring guided visit to the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini and the adjacent archive of the archconfraternity of that name, led by its director, Dr. Julia Vicioso, enjoying the rare opportunity to leaf through some of its manuscripts. After a meeting with noted historian of slavery, Prof. Giulia Bonazza, she joined us for a visit to Sala1, led by its director, curator Mary A. Schroth, a specialist on the history of the Scala Santa--where we had the privilege of having her as our guide. This day ended with a dinner meeting with prominent historian of conversion and slavery, Prof. Sabina Pavone. Then on the third day of our trip, we headed out to the Castelli Romani, guided by the amazing Prof. Fabrizio Conti--a native of the Castelli Romani--who introduced us to local historian Dr. Ugo Onorati, from whom we learned the surprising (and little known!) history of the "Fontana dei mori" in Marino. After a day full of beautiful historical sites, FemSMed’s members got to discuss their research with leading women's historian Prof. Isabella Gagliardi. Then on Monday we headed to Naples, where Prof. Daniela Luigia (Gia) Caglioti, Director of the program in early modern and modern history at the Scuola Superiore Meridionale, hosted our team there, introduced us to this institute's historians, and showed us around a few of the many breathtaking historical sites of the magical city. At the end of this enchanting day, we were ready for the EuaRe conference.
