FemSMed's panels at the Annual Conference of the European Academy of Religion on "Religions and (In)Equalities"

On July 2, FemSmed's members presented their research at the Annual Meeting of the European Academy of Religion on "Religions and (In)Equalities" at LUISS University in Rome. FemSMed's first panel, CONVERSIONS AT THE MARGINS: ENSLAVED WOMEN AND RELIGIOUS POWER IN EARLY MODERN EUROPE, organized by Dr. Benedetta Chizzolini, was chaired by Prof. Massimo Carlo Giannini (University of Teramo) and Prof. Serena Di Nepi (Sapienza University of Rome) provided an insightful commentary on the brilliant presentations on "Female Baptisms and Political Power: The Conversions of Enslaved Women in Medicean Tuscany" (Dr. Chizzolini); "Enslaved Women: Renegades and their Masters, Conversion, Abuse, and Agency" (Nil Abend); and "Between Conversion and Judaizing: Enslaved Female Converts in Jewish Households in Early Modern Italy" (Eliah Jaffe).
FemSMed's second panel, ENSLAVED WOMEN, CHARITY, AND RELIGIOUS CONVERSION: GENDERED INEQUALITIES IN EARLY MODERN EUROPE, organized by Dr. Joseph Jackson-Eade, was chaired by Prof. Giovanni Tarantino (University of Florence), who also provided illuminating comments, and included fascinating papers on "Mothers and Babies: Enslaved Women and their Abandoned Children at the Ospedale degli Innocenti in Florence" (Eynav Ovadia); "Washing their Dirty Linen in Public? Washerwomen and Charitable Institutions in Sixteenth-Century Lisbon" (Dr. Jackson-Eade); and "The Charitable Fashioning of Salvation: The Baptismal Dress of Enslaved Women in Seventeenth-Century Livorno" (Lisa Molina).
In between these two sessions, FemSMed's members also had the opportunity to discuss their ongoing research with Prof. Tarantino and with Prof. Michaela Valente of Sapienza University of Rome.
